eautifully preserved, this legendary family-owned & operated adobe consists of three suites, all historically furnished with the elegance reminiscent of another era. The Merritt House Hotel offers Boutique Hotel accommodations.

Each suite has a separate parlor and fireplace. The suites are nestled among towering magnolia, pepper, holly and olive trees. A grand old fig, a captivating rose garden and pridefully tended lawns make a tremendous contribution to the nostalgic atmosphere provided by this comfortable inn.

The Merritt House provides close proximity to the areas most well-known attractions. Within walking distance is the Monterey Conference Center, Fisherman’s Wharf, and many fine shops and restaurants. Minutes away is the world famous Monterey Bay Aquarium, Steinbeck’s Cannery Row, the popular 17-Mile Drive as well as many famous art galleries.

The Merritt House was developed into its present use in 1979 and is currently listed on the National Register of Historic Places to preserve its statewide significance. It is also listed annually in the Monterey History and Art Association Adobe Tour held every April.

he Merritt House was developed into its present use in 1979 and is currently listed on the National Register of Historic Places to preserve its statewide significance. It is also listed annually in the Monterey History and Art Association Adobe Tour held every April.

The Merritt House was originally built in 1830.  It was purchased in 1852 by Juana Castro, the wife of Josiah Merritt and was used as the couple’s private residence. Josiah Merritt served as first county judge from 1851-1854 and was active in organizing Monterey County in 1881. The property is now owned and operated by the – family, who pride themselves on their warmth and hospitality.
